    The ACT's unemployment rate increased by 2.5 percentage points to 6.6 per cent in October 2021, the highest among all states and territories. Employment decreased by 4,800 persons (-2.1 per cent) in the month. The participation rate rose by 0.2 percentage points to 68.4 per cent in October 2021.

    The decline in ACT's employment in October 2021 was driven by declines in both full-time employment (down by 1,700 persons) and part-time employment (down by 3,100 persons). Male employment fell by 3,300 personsin October 2021 while female employment fell by 1,600 persons in the month.

    Hours worked in the ACT rose by 3.1 per cent in the month, recovering part of the large fall in September (10.5 per cent). Hours worked in the ACT  decreased by 12.3 per cent over the year to October 2021.

    Nationally, the unemployment rate rose to 5.2 per cent in October 2021, from 4.6 per cent in  September 2021. Employment fell by 46,300 persons in the month, reflecting decreases in employment across Australia except New South Wales, South Australia, and the Northern Territory. Employment levels for New South Wales, Victoria, Northern Territory and the ACT in October 2021 are now below the level reported in March 2020.

    Hours worked nationally fell by 0.1 per cent in the month and by 0.4 per cent over the year to October 2021.
